Grand National is God's Country
O.k. This part of the trail is what I consider God's Country. Grand National, in Auburn/Opelika is where I could live year 'round. What else can you say besides "War Eagle!". O.k. we aren't here to talk about college football, but rather golf. However, if I were you I would plan this trip around football season so you could catch a glimpse of the ferocious Tigers while your down there.
Now onto the courses.
Grand National
has 3 great courses for you to tame while on the plains.
The Links Course
The Lakes Course
& The Short Course
Golf Digest hyped up The Links Course in 1993 by giving it the 2nd best new public course in America. Not too far behind that year The Lakes Course was 4th! And the three courses combined won the award for to 40 Super Value courses to play.
With all of these awards hanging from their chest, there must be something there to deserve it.
Let's find out.
When Robert Trent Jones Sr. scouted land for his trail, he said that this area was the single greatest site for a golf complex. The views around the courses are simply amazing. They built it on a 600 acre lake, where 32 of the 54 holes are carved out along the shores.
The backbone of Grand National is the Links Course. It carries in it's arsenal the strongest finishing hole on the entire trail. You have to crush your drive over the corner of the lake and then delicately place your approach on a pedestal style green, and oh yeah there are huge boulders guarding it. Good luck!
The Lakes Course not to be outdone is just as scenic and has four par threes that can rival any in the nation. Many say the par 3 15th is the prettiest hole on the trail.
The Short Course, a one shotter's dream is filled with picturesque par 3s that will give you goose bumps all over.
What a way to spend a couple of days! Get out there now!
